Amman, the capital of Jordan, is built on hills, and many of its neighbourhoods are tied together by long public stairways. Climbing them in the afternoon sun is hard work. Our rule reads the slope and the sun along the stairway: the steeper the flight, the more often a landing appears, and each landing gets a bench and a canopy angled against the western sun. The old stone steps stay; the landings are added beside them, with handrails on both sides.
